“Stand your ground, don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.”

Captain John Parker, on April 19, 1775 stood with his minutemen in Lexington and uttered these words referencing the British light infantry soldiers on approach to their location. These soldiers were an advance unit of a much larger force passing through Lexington towards Concord to search for “illegal” weapons and supplies.

Both sides had orders to stand down and avoid exchanging fire. Fighting began even after Parker had ordered his men to disperse and avoid the confrontation, but they did not. At some point every man must choose to declare liberty, adopt the cause of personal responsibility and invest with deliberate action and thought in his own destiny.
